On Monday, August 27, CAAL members and their guests learned about the architecture of the award-winning hotel, The Standard, which cuts across The High Line in the Meatpacking district of NYC.  CAAL attendees began the evening with a presentation from Megan Miller '94GSAPP of Ennead Architects, the project architect for the design of The Standard, before heading to the private roof of the hotel's clubLe Bain, featuring New Yorkers' favorite (and trendy) rooftop bar and spectacular views of New York City.

The High Line

The High Line currently runs from Gansevoort Street, three blocks below West 14th Street, in the Meatpacking District, up to 30th Street, through the neighborhood of Chelsea to the West Side Yard, near the Javits Convention Center. Often credited for the revitalization of the surrounding neighborhoods, the High Line has been labelled an "urban oasis" (The New York Times) that has spurred not only real estate development in the area but also a renaissance in terms of architecture and urbanism.

The Standard

Winner of numerous awards including the AIA National Honor Award for Architecture in 2012 and the AIA New York State Excellence in Design in 2010, The Standard straddles the High Line on 13th Street. The two slabs of the building are angled to emphasized the building's distinction from the city's grid and its levitation above the neighborhood. The low-scale environment affords the building unique visibility from all directions and unobstructed 360-degree views of the city.
