Greer Hendricks ‘94JRN Debuts New Novel

The Wife Between Us on bookstands January 9, 2018

Greer Hendricks ‘94JRN debuts her first novel The Wife Between Us, co-authored with Sarah Pekkanen which will be coming soon to bookstands on January 9, 2018. The Wife Between Us is a mind-bending story of Vanessa, and her obsessive quest to prevent her seemingly perfect husband from marrying a beautiful, younger woman. If the story sounds familiar, it isn't. The book has now sold into 29 countries and will be adapted into a movie by the team behind The Girl on the Train.

The authors tell us how this book came to be…

Eight years ago, when Sarah was writing her first novel (The Opposite of Me, Atria 2010), she made a list of her dream editors, one of which was Greer. Greer had edited several of Sarah’s favorite authors, including Jennifer Weiner, and really hoped Greer would be interested in her debut. Greer was! The two of them immediately hit it off – they joke it was “love at first sight” – and Greer acquired Sarah’s book.

Seven books later, their relationship developed beyond simply author/editor. They learned they had an uncanny number of things in common, including being the exact same age, having backgrounds in psychology and journalism, being terrible cooks, and being close to their brothers (who happen to both be named Robert). Over the years, they would meet for four-hour dinners, where they talked about everything from books to social issues to their children to makeup and exercise.

When Greer left corporate publishing at the end of 2014, she had some editorial and consulting projects lined up, but also knew, in the back of her mind, that she wanted to write fiction. Although she didn’t reveal this to many people, one of her confidantes was Sarah. After Sarah completed the edits on her most recent book, she approached Greer with an idea: “Let’s write a book together.” Greer asked to sleep on it, but then emailed Sarah before 5 a.m. the next morning, already buzzing with excitement. They immediately began to brainstorm ideas and quickly hit upon a premise that gripped them both, and also played to their strengths: a relatable female protagonist and plot centering around the complex psychological issues that lay at the heart of a dangerous romantic entanglement. They were especially intrigued by narratives that explored the same events from different characters’ perspectives (a la Lauren Groff’s Fates and Furies, and Showtime’s The Affair). The result of this unique – perhaps even unprecedented in publishing – collaboration became The Wife Between Us.
