The Cupping Room, established in 1977, was originally a wholesale coffee distributor that brewed various coffees and teas. Prospective customers tasted these different blends in a process known as "cupping," hence the restaurant's name. The Cupping Room is housed in a landmark building that is over one hundred years old. The tin ceiling, pot belly stove, and exposed brick walls are part of the original décor. Through the years, the Cupping Room expanded from a local café to a full service restaurant, which is family owned and operated, and now serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner 365 days a year.
DB Bistro Moderne is Daniel Boulud’s interpretation of the new generation of Parisian bistros, whose classically trained chefs offer creative cuisine in a casual, comfortable, and contemporary setting. From a very young age, Craig Cupani's fondest memories were of dinners in the family kitchen. Raised in an Italian American home, the kitchen was the gathering place for family, neighbors, and friends. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in 1988, Craig worked his way through the ranks to become Executive Sous Chef at the world famous '21' Club on E. 52nd Street. He was recruited away from '21' to become the Executive Chef of Butterfield 81, restaurateur Ken Aretsky’s neighborhood restaurant on the Upper East Side. Now at the Glass House Tavern, Cupani brings his creativity to New York’s theatre district. Glass House Tavern offers contemporary American cuisine along with a bar menu to satisfy any craving.

Haru is a modern Japanese restaurant group with nine high-profile locations in Manhattan, Boston, and Philadelphia. The restaurant on Amsterdam Avenue, the original Haru, is one of the longest standing establishments on the Upper West Side's "restaurant row," and features an inventive menu that includes signature dishes like carpaccios, tartares, filet mignon, grilled spicy shrimp, and specialty sushi rolls.

To chickpea connoisseurs, making hummus is a fine art, one they seem to have mastered at this sliver of an Upper West Side restaurant where the single-minded menu consists of several thick versions of the Middle Eastern spread, accessorized with puffy pita, pickles, and hot sauce. A proprietary brand of imported white tahini is the not-so-secret ingredient, giving the spread its pale-beige color and ineluctably rich flavor (the hummus operandi tending toward the smooth and nutty versus the coarse and lemony). Purists can order it relatively unadorned, with just a swirl of good extra-virgin olive oil and a dusting of cumin, paprika, and parsley, or up the bean quotient with two variations on the theme: one topped with warm, soft whole chickpeas (masbacha), the other with earthy, slow-cooked favas and a sliced hardboiled egg (called foul, pronounced “fool”).

Chef Ryan Skeen consulted on the Italian bill of fare at this Upper West Side restaurant, a revamp of the former Campo space. Crowd-pleasing favorites, like spaghetti and meatballs and chicken Parmesan rollatine, share menu space with more-sophisticated plates, including porchetta with pickled red-onion relish on ciabatta. The 140-seat canteen features exposed-brick walls and a long mahogany bar.
Guests are always impressed by the scope and creativity of the menu selections at L'Ecole. Their surprise turns to amazement, however, when they discover that every one of the spectacular dishes is prepared not by top New York chefs, but by French Culinary Institute students. In a city where excellence is a price of entry, even the savviest diners have trouble believing that students could perform at such a high level. Dishes are contemporary French, and spiced with an array of ethnic influences that make each one especially memorable. Bon appetit!
